Wildfire Status:

The Pedro Mine Fire, located nine miles east of Sheridan in the Mill Creek area, is currently active and burning in steep, rocky terrain. Access for firefighters is limited due to the difficult landscape, which also features a significant number of standing dead trees, known as "snags." These conditions pose serious risks for firefighter safety and complicate medical emergency responses. Fire managers are collaborating with local Madison County officials to prioritize the protection of critical values at risk, including private structures, active mining claims, and the Branham Lakes Campground, all situated within a half-mile of the fire's perimeter.

As of the latest update, the fire has grown to 152 acres but has shown no significant activity due to favorable weather conditions. A combination of abundant snow and rain has contributed to a measured 1 inch of moisture, effectively stalling the fire's growth. The forecast indicates the potential for an additional 0.5 to 1.0 inches of precipitation overnight, with higher elevations possibly receiving measurable snowfall. This weather pattern is expected to act as a season-moderating event, significantly reducing fire activity.

Currently, there are eight personnel assigned to the incident, and operations are being strategically adjusted. Firefighting efforts will be unstaffed for the next day to allow conditions to dry out while crews focus on other projects in the district. A barricade remains in place at critical access points to ensure public safety until crews can safely clear hazardous snags from the campground and surrounding areas. The Forest is under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, emphasizing careful management of fire-related activities in the region.
