Wildfire Status:

The Pedro Mine Fire, located nine miles east of Sheridan in the Mill Creek area, is currently active and has burned approximately 150 acres since its ignition on September 4, 2024, likely caused by lightning. The fire is situated in steep, rocky terrain, making access difficult for firefighting crews. This challenging landscape is compounded by a significant presence of standing dead trees, known as snags, which pose safety risks for firefighters and complicate emergency medical response efforts.

Fire managers, in collaboration with local Madison County officials, are strategically focusing their firefighting resources on protecting critical assets, including private structures, active mining claims, and the Branham Lakes Campground, all located within 0.1 to 0.6 miles of the fire's edge. Current operational strategies for managing the fire involve a combination of monitoring, confining, and point zone protection, with operational objectives reported as 100% complete. Decision-making for wildfire management considers various factors including firefighter safety, resource availability, and potential threats to public safety and property.

As of now, no personnel are actively deployed on the fire line, reflecting a shift to a monitoring phase as conditions are reassessed. Fire managers are continually evaluating the situation to adapt their strategies as necessary, focusing on the well-being of both the responders and the surrounding communities.
