Long Tom Fire (MTMTS)

Wildfire Status:

The Long Tom Fire, which ignited on September 8, 2024, is currently burning in open grass and timber approximately 10 miles south of Anaconda, Montana. The fire has spread onto the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area and is under the protection of the Montana DNRC. As of now, the fire has reached a size of 57 acres, and 70% of its perimeter is contained. The incident is being managed by the DNRC Anaconda Unit, and command was transferred back to them on September 12, 2024. The fire will remain in patrol status for monitoring until the end of the season.

Currently, there are no structures threatened by the fire, but the Continental Divide Trail has been impacted, with the public advised to avoid the area. Fire restrictions are in place in Butte-Silver Bow County and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, specifically Stage 1 restrictions. There will continue to be smoke in the vicinity, but residents are asked not to report it. For any inquiries, the DNRC Anaconda Unit office can be contacted at 406-563-6078.

As for the current response, there are 20 personnel assigned to the incident. The fire behavior is characterized as minimal, with smoldering and creeping observed. The estimated date for full containment of the fire is projected for October 31, 2024. The fuels involved include timber and grass, specifically tall grass up to 2.5 feet in height. Weather conditions will continue to be monitored as the fire response evolves.
