Wildfire Status:
The Long Tom Fire, which was first detected on September 8, 2024, is currently active and burning in open grass and timber approximately 10 miles south of Anaconda, Montana. The fire has spread onto the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and the Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area. As of now, 70% of the fire's perimeter is contained, and it has affected an area of 57 acres. The fire is under the management of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), with command recently transferred back to the DNRC Anaconda Unit.
Fire agencies have reported that there are currently 20 personnel involved in the firefighting efforts. The fire is being monitored and will remain in patrol status until the end of the season. Fortunately, no structures are threatened, although the Continental Divide Trail is impacted, and the public is advised to avoid the area. Additionally, Butte-Silver Bow County and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest are under Stage 1 fire restrictions, highlighting the elevated risk of fire in the region.
Weather conditions in the area are contributing to the situation, as there is ongoing smoke from the fire, which residents should not report. The fire is primarily burning in timber and grass fuel types, with minimal active burning, described as smoldering and creeping. The estimated containment date for the Long Tom Fire is set for October 31, 2024, as agencies continue to monitor and manage the situation closely.
