Jericho Mountain Fire (MTHLF)

Wildfire Status:

As of July 11, 2025, the Jericho Mountain Fire, which began on June 15, is fully contained and no visible smoke has been detected. The fire was located approximately 5 miles south of MacDonald Pass and was initially reported to have burned in heavy dead and down fuels. The Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 6, led by Incident Commander Rich Cowger, took over management of the fire on June 21. The fire will transition to a Type 5 status, which involves limited resources for ongoing patrol and monitoring.

In terms of response, the initial firefighting efforts involved the Forest Service, Montana DNRC, as well as Baxendale and Elliston Volunteer Fire Departments. Since achieving full containment, local resources will continue to patrol the area to ensure that no flare-ups occur. Additionally, the Helena Ranger District has lifted the closure order for all roads and trails, including the Continental Divide Trail, effective July 10. However, the public is urged to exercise caution around the burned areas due to potential hazards such as unstable surfaces and weakened trees.

Weather conditions in the region have remained favorable for containment efforts, contributing to the fire's current status. Forest officials remind the public to stay informed about current conditions and to be responsible when recreating in the area, particularly regarding campfire safety and adherence to firework restrictions on Forest Service lands.
