Wildfire Status:
The Long Tom Fire, which was first detected on September 8, 2024, is currently burning in open grass and timber approximately 10 miles south of Anaconda, Montana, within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and the Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area. As of now, the fire has spread to cover about 57 acres, with approximately 70% of its perimeter contained. Command of the fire has been transferred back to the DNRC Anaconda Unit, and it is now in a patrol status, meaning it will continue to be monitored until the end of the season.
Fire agencies have deployed around 20 personnel to manage the situation. Although there are no structures currently threatened, the Continental Divide Trail has been impacted, and the public is advised to avoid the area. Butte-Silver Bow County and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest are under Stage 1 fire restrictions to prevent further fire risks. Firefighters are primarily dealing with minimal smoldering and creeping, indicating that the fire is not currently experiencing aggressive growth.
Weather conditions in the area will continue to generate smoke, which residents and visitors should not report. The estimated containment date for the Long Tom Fire is set for October 31, 2024, but the situation will be assessed regularly as conditions change. For any inquiries, the public can contact the DNRC Anaconda Unit office.
