Wildfire Status:

The Long Tom Fire, which ignited on September 8, 2024, is currently burning in open grass and timber approximately 10 miles south of Anaconda, Montana. As of the latest updates, the fire has spread across 57 acres with 50% of its perimeter contained. The incident is under the jurisdiction of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), and command has been transferred back to the DNRC Anaconda Unit as of September 12. The fire is being monitored and will remain in a patrol status until the end of the fire season.

Currently, there are no structures threatened by the fire, but the Continental Divide Trail has been impacted, and the public is advised to avoid the area. The fire is characterized by active burning conditions, including creeping and torching behavior, particularly in timber and tall grass fuels. Smoke is expected to persist in the vicinity, and residents are asked not to report it. The DNRC Anaconda Unit has provided a contact number for inquiries.

Weather conditions are projected to improve the situation over the next 48 hours, with steady rain and snow anticipated at the fire elevation, which should help moderate fire activity. However, Butte-Silver Bow County and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest are currently under Stage 1 fire restrictions, emphasizing the need for caution in the region. The estimated containment date for the fire is set for October 31, 2024.
