Wildfire Status:
The Moore Square Complex, comprising the Anchor Fire and Ace Butte Fire, is currently active in the Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area, approximately 23 miles northeast of Riggins, Idaho. As of the latest update, the combined size of the fires is approximately 3,673 acres, with 50% of the perimeter contained. The fires were ignited by a lightning storm on July 24, 2024, and have been influenced by recent weather conditions, which have contributed to their activity.
Firefighting efforts are being conducted by a team of 90 personnel, focusing on point protection and confinement strategies. These strategies aim to protect identified values at risk without primarily seeking to halt the spread of the fire. The incident commander has reported active fire behavior, including group torching and spotting, with fire growth expected around the perimeter. Planned actions include the continued establishment of indirect lines in anticipation of fire movement, utilizing existing roads as natural containment features.
Favorable weather conditions are currently aiding firefighting efforts, as recent rainfall has significantly decreased fire activity. Showers and thunderstorms are forecasted to continue, with a high probability of further precipitation, which could provide additional relief. This weather pattern is expected to keep daytime temperatures cooler and increase humidity levels, while winds remain relatively light. The fire area closure will be lifted on September 14, 2024, at 6 PM, allowing public access to the Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area, reflecting the positive impact of the recent weather on fire management.
