Cox Pond Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Cox Pond Fire, which ignited on August 5, 2024, in the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, has currently burned approximately 388 acres and is reported to be 40% contained. The fire, caused by lightning, is situated about 29 miles south of St. George, Utah, and is primarily spreading through heavy brush, including sage and grass. Fortunately, there are no structures threatened by the fire at this time.
Fire suppression efforts are being coordinated by the Arizona Strip District, which has deployed a diverse array of resources to combat the blaze. These include one Type 2 initial attack crew, four Type 6 engines, one helicopter, and support from air attack and smoke jumpers. Despite these efforts, the fire remains at 0% containment as of the latest reports.
Current weather conditions pose additional challenges for firefighting teams, with gusty winds being a primary concern. These conditions can exacerbate fire behavior and complicate containment efforts. The Bureau of Land Management emphasizes the importance of safety during wildfire operations, particularly regarding the prohibition of drones in the area, as their presence can hinder firefighting activities.
