Cox Pond Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Cox Pond Fire, ignited by lightning on August 5, 2024, is currently active in the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, approximately 29 miles south of St. George, Utah. The fire has grown to an estimated 388 acres, with 40% of its perimeter contained. Firefighters are facing challenges due to the remote location of the fire and the difficult access to the area, which is characterized by heavy brush, specifically sage and grass.
Response efforts are underway by the Arizona Strip District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Firefighting resources include one Type 2 initial attack crew, four Type 6 engines, one helicopter, and smoke jumpers. Despite these efforts, containment remains at 0%, indicating that the fire is still spreading. Fortunately, no structures are currently threatened by the flames.
Weather conditions are contributing to the complexity of the firefighting efforts, with gusty winds posing a significant concern. These winds can potentially exacerbate the fire's spread and complicate containment strategies. Authorities have emphasized the importance of maintaining a no-drone zone around the fire area to ensure the safety of both firefighting personnel and aircraft operations.
