Grapefruit Complex (AKUYD)

Wildfire Status:

The Grapefruit Complex wildfire, ignited by lightning on June 28, 2024, is currently burning approximately 30 miles northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska, on both sides of Highway 2. The fire has spread across an area of 89,011 acres, with about 90% of its perimeter contained as of the latest update. Although fire activity has significantly decreased, smoke and flames are still occasionally visible within the perimeters. Fire managers from the BLM Alaska Fire Service are overseeing the situation and expect the fire to continue until a season-ending precipitation event occurs.

Currently, a total of 86 personnel are engaged in firefighting efforts. The fire's fuel composition includes brush, hardwood litter, and timber, with black spruce and tussock tundra being the primary carriers of the blaze. Planned actions include ongoing suppression repair and coordination for the demobilization of resources, alongside assessing the impact of any precipitation on fire behavior. The estimated containment date has been set for October 30, 2024, although updates will now occur only as necessary due to the reduced fire activity.
