Wildfire Status:

The Kachess Complex, comprising three lightning-sparked fires in the Cle Elum Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, has been actively monitored since it ignited on August 9 and 10, 2024. The fires include the Stave Creek, Thomas, and Waptus fires, with the latter located further north near Waptus Lake. As of August 17, 2024, the total area affected by the complex is approximately 23 acres, with significant containment progress made in recent days.

As of the latest update, the Stave Creek fire is reported at 12.1 acres and is 35% contained, while the Thomas fire, covering 9 acres, is 95% contained. The Waptus fire is fully contained at 0.5 acres. The Albuquerque Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team has transitioned fire management responsibilities back to the Cle Elum Ranger District. This transition signifies a shift to local management as the situation stabilizes, with 155 personnel currently engaged in firefighting efforts.

The fire behavior has primarily involved smoldering and creeping, with isolated instances of single tree torching, indicating a moderate level of activity. The fuels involved include mixed conifer with sub-alpine fir and a heavy dead and down component, which can complicate suppression efforts. The estimated containment date for the Kachess Complex is set for October 15, 2024. Weather conditions in the area remain a critical factor in fire management, although specific current weather data is not provided in the latest update. For ongoing details and any significant developments, inquiries can be directed to the local ranger district.
