Chainey Mountain Fire 2026
Chainey Mountain Fire has burned 1,200 acres, burning 15 miles west of Childress.

At 10:43 am on Friday May 15th, Texas A&M Forest Service received a request for assistance for a fire 18 miles West of Childress, Texas. The Chainey Mountain Fire is 3 miles west of FM 94 in Hall County and burning in juniper mixed vegetation. In coordination with local fire departments, Texas A&M Forest Service crews are responded with additional firefighters, heavy equipment, and aviation resources. Crews are constructing containment lines around the perimeter of the fire with existing roads and where necessary.
Update - May 16 - 2:45 p.m. Dozers are continuing to make progress around the left flank of the fire. Few smokes within the containment line remain.
As of 6:50 p.m. on May 16, 2026, the fire is 100% contained. All state resources are off of the fire. This is the last planned update for this fire.
