Wildfire Status:
The Wiley Flat Fire, located approximately 10 miles southeast of Post, Oregon, has been actively burning since September 2, 2024. Triggered by lightning, the fire has primarily affected grass and shrubs at lower elevations while consuming timber in higher areas. As of the latest update, the fire has scorched an estimated 30,186 acres, with 98% of its perimeter now contained. Evacuations remain in effect for areas surrounding the fire, and the Ochoco National Forest has enacted temporary closures in the Paulina and Lookout Mountain Ranger Districts. The Bureau of Land Management has also issued a temporary closure for certain public lands in nearby Crook and Grant Counties.
Firefighting efforts have transitioned back to local management from Alaska IMT 3 as of September 30. Currently, 14 personnel are engaged in containment efforts, focusing on securing the perimeter and implementing a Suppression Repair Plan. The current weather conditions present a mixed challenge for firefighting operations. Cooler temperatures were observed in the morning, ranging from 30 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit, with relative humidity recovering to 60-70%. However, temperatures are expected to rise into the 70s, leading to very dry conditions with afternoon humidity levels dropping to 10-15%. Forecasts indicate light winds from the northwest, which may influence fire behavior in the coming days.
Looking ahead, the fire management team plans to continue direct and indirect tactics to meet containment objectives. Weather patterns are expected to remain dry, with potential for moderate to active fire behavior where heat and available fuels are present. Isolated heavy fuels, such as stump holes and log ends, are likely to continue smoldering due to their prolonged dryness. The operational outlook suggests a cooling trend following the recent warmth, but dry conditions will persist, necessitating ongoing vigilance in fire management strategies.
