Elk Fire (OR98S)

Wildfire Status:

The Elk Fire is currently active and has been burning since July 8, 2025, in the Bly Mountain area, approximately 8 miles north of Bonanza, Oregon. The fire has grown to an estimated size of 2,592 acres, and as of now, 0% of its perimeter is contained. Firefighters are on the scene, employing aircraft for aerial support and conducting ground operations to suppress the fire. Evacuations are in effect, with a shelter established by the Red Cross at Living Spring Church in Bonanza.

The response to the Elk Fire is coordinated under a unified command, involving the Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 1 and the Oregon State Fire Marshal Red Team. Incident commanders Joe Hessel and Ian Yocum are overseeing the efforts in collaboration with Klamath County Fire Districts and the Bureau of Land Management. Currently, there are 564 personnel engaged in firefighting operations, with significant activities including direct attacks on the fire, scouting for containment lines, and structure protection initiatives.

Weather conditions are a critical factor in the fire's progression. Although red flag warnings were not reissued, gusty northwest winds are expected to create potential spotting hazards. The forecast indicates a return to hot temperatures over the weekend, which may exacerbate fire conditions as the atmosphere dries out. Planned actions include identifying and constructing containment lines, conducting burnout operations, and maintaining situational awareness for potential threats to nearby structures and critical infrastructure. As of July 10, the estimated cost of firefighting efforts has reached approximately $1.6 million.
