Salt Creek (OR710S)

Wildfire Status:

The Salt Creek Fire, which began on July 7, 2024, is currently located approximately 10 miles east of Eagle Point, Oregon. As of July 17, the fire has burned a total of 4,102 acres and is 84% contained. The fire perimeter is fully lined, and the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Incident Management Team 1 is set to transition command to a local Type 3 organization on July 18. Initial estimates indicated rapid growth from 2-5 acres to over 200 acres within a short period due to hot, dry, and windy conditions.

Firefighting efforts have included a substantial response from multiple agencies, with 695 personnel currently working on the incident. Resources deployed include engines, bulldozers, water tenders, and various aircraft, including six helicopters and multiple air tankers. The operational focus has been on mopping up around the perimeter, mitigating hazard trees, and ensuring the fire does not escape containment lines. Despite the fire's previous intensity, current fire behavior is minimal, characterized by smoldering and creeping.

Weather conditions have posed challenges, with temperatures soaring into the low 100s, low humidity levels around 13-18%, and a heat advisory in effect. Thunderstorms have developed nearby, but they have not directly impacted the fire area. As the incident progresses, the forecast predicts a slight cooling trend and improved humidity recovery, which is expected to aid firefighters in their continued efforts to fully contain the fire by the estimated date of July 24, 2024.
