Rehder Creek Fire 2026
Rehder Creek Fire is the largest wildfire this season in Montana, burning 9 miles southeast of Roundup.
Latest update
The Rehder Creek Fire started at approximately 3 pm on February 26, 2026, driven by strong gusty winds that caused rapid fire spread. Multiple engines and personnel responded from local, state, and federal agencies.
Current Status
Yesterday, additional mapping was completed around the fire perimeter to improve the accuracy of the fire’s footprint, resulting in a reduction in the total acreage. The Rehder Creek Fire burned entirely within the footprint of the 2021 Bobcat Fire scar, where previously burned vegetation and reduced fuel loading likely influenced fire behavior. The residual fuel loading from the dead and downed trees contributed to areas of heavier fuel consumption.
Mop-up operations remain ongoing as crews continue to work two chains, approximately 120 feet, or more into the interior from the control line, searching for and extinguishing any remaining hot spots. During this process, firefighters are gridding the area, turning over smoldering material, and applying water to ensure heat is fully extinguished.
The fire is anticipated to be 100% contained by end of day today, March 1st, and all assigned resources are expected to be demobilized as suppression objectives will be met. Command of the fire will transition back to Musselshell County this evening. Over the next several days, local engines will patrol the fire area, monitoring for residual heat and responding quickly to any signs of smoke. Smoke may be visible over the next few days.
This will be the final daily update for the Rehder Creek Fire.
