Wildfire Status:

The McElwain Fire, located approximately 10 miles west of Helmville in Powell County, Montana, has burned 116 acres and is currently 75% contained. The fire is characterized by creeping and smoldering behavior, with isolated torching occurring within its perimeter. It is burning primarily in grass and timber on both private and Bureau of Land Management lands under the protection of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). Firefighters are actively working to secure control lines and are focusing on mopping up operations within the fire's interior to extinguish any remaining flames and heat.

As of the latest update, there are no evacuation warnings in place for the surrounding area. A total of 14 personnel are currently assigned to the incident, continuing efforts to manage and contain the fire effectively. The incident originated from a lightning strike on August 23, 2024, and the ongoing response aims to fully suppress the fire while ensuring safety for nearby residents and the environment.

Weather conditions are presenting challenges for firefighting efforts, with blustery west to northwesterly winds expected to persist along with dry conditions through Tuesday. Overnight humidity recoveries are noted to be poor, which may complicate containment efforts. However, a significant change in the weather pattern is anticipated, leading to wetter and cooler conditions starting mid-week, which could aid in firefighting efforts. Future updates regarding the fire will be provided through Inciweb unless conditions change significantly.
