Wildfire Status:
The Hilger Valley Fire, located approximately 20 miles north of Helena, MT, was first discovered on June 9, 2025. Firefighting efforts have been robust, with a full suppression strategy employed to combat the blaze, which is burning in steep and rugged terrain consisting of timber and grass. As of the latest updates, firefighters have successfully established a complete containment line around the fire's perimeter. This line was constructed using both handlines and dozer lines, which held firm during recent wind events. Overnight infrared flights confirmed that any remaining heat is contained within these control lines.
Fire agencies have deployed significant resources to manage the situation, including four hand crews, eleven engines, one dozer, two water tenders, and one helicopter. Firefighters are currently engaged in mop-up operations, working diligently to extinguish any remaining heat sources within a two-chain (132 feet) radius of the fire's boundary. They utilize a method known as gridding and cold-trailing, which involves scanning the ground for hot spots and manually checking for lingering heat. When detected, they dig into the soil with hand tools and apply water until the area is cool to the touch. A helicopter is also providing aerial support by dropping water on hot spots.
As for the weather conditions, the area has experienced wind events that challenged firefighting efforts but the established containment lines have held up well. The fire is still active, but the DNRC County Assist Team will soon transition command back to the DNRC Helena Unit, which will continue to monitor the area to ensure full containment and prevent reignition. Smoke may still be visible in the coming days as isolated pockets of unburned fuel continue to smolder. The situation remains dynamic, and firefighting agencies are committed to maintaining control over the fire until it is completely extinguished.
