Deadman Fire (MTMTS)

Wildfire Status:

The Deadman Fire, located approximately 17 miles south of Birney, Montana, has been actively burning since it was ignited by dry lightning on July 12 and 13, 2024. Currently, the fire has reached a total size of 47,827 acres, with significant areas reported as contained: 97% for the Deadman Fire, 89% for the McGhee Fire, and 100% for both the Prairie and Four Mile Fires. The command of the Deadman Fire will transition to a local Type 4 Team by July 24, indicating that the incident is nearing full containment.

Fire agencies have been actively engaged in suppression efforts, with a total of 207 personnel currently assigned to the incident. The focus of these efforts has been on patrolling and mopping up uncontrolled edges of the fire, as well as repairing suppression and control lines. As of the latest updates, the situation is stabilizing, with minimal fire behavior expected, characterized by creeping and smoldering rather than active flames.

Weather conditions over the coming days are a concern, as a strong upper-level ridge is expected to bring very hot temperatures ranging from 100 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, combined with low humidity levels in the lower teens. This could lead to critical fire weather, particularly with gusty winds forecasted for Thursday, which may exacerbate fire spread. However, a cold front moving through the area late Thursday night is anticipated to bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms, potentially aiding in fire containment efforts. Additionally, smoke from regional fires, including those in Canada, is affecting air quality in the area.
