Wildfire Status:
The South Selway Complex consists of several lightning-caused wildfires currently burning in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area, located south of the upper Selway River. As of now, the total area affected by the fires is approximately 1,927 acres. The most significant fire within the complex is the Crimson Fire, which has grown to about 723 acres since its detection on August 8, 2024. Other smaller fires in the complex include the Roll Tide Fire and Otter Fire, both around eight acres, as well as the Goat Creek Fire, which measures approximately 867 acres.
Fire response efforts are being coordinated under the command of ICT3 (t) Nate Seitz, with a current personnel count of four firefighters actively engaged in monitoring and managing the situation. Planned actions include assessments and the prepositioning of structure protection equipment for nearby private inholdings and critical infrastructure, such as trails and bridges. Fire behavior has notably moderated due to significant rainfall received in recent days, which has contributed to a reduction in fire intensity.
Weather conditions are forecasted to remain mostly favorable, with temperatures expected to rise slightly into the low 80s on September 14, 2024. There is also a slight chance of rain showers over the weekend, with temperatures stabilizing between the mid-60s to mid-70s through early next week. The combination of recent rainfall and projected weather patterns is aiding in containment efforts, with an estimated containment date set for December 31, 2024.
