Hamilton, Montana, United States
South Selway Complex
Wildfire Status:
The South Selway Complex, encompassing multiple lightning-caused wildfires, is currently active within the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area in Idaho. As of October 1, 2024, the complex has burned approximately 1,927 acres, with the largest fire, the Crimson Fire, accounting for 723 acres. Other smaller fires within the complex include the Goat Creek Fire at 867 acres, and several others ranging from a quarter of an acre to 12 acres. The incident has been managed by Incident Commander Nate Seitz, and there are currently four personnel assigned to the response.
Fire agencies are focused on assessing the situation and preparing structure protection equipment for critical infrastructures, including trails and communication sites. The recent weather has played a crucial role in moderating fire behavior, thanks to significant rainfall received over the past few days. While temperatures are expected to rise slightly into the low 80s this coming weekend, forecasts indicate a chance of rain showers, which could further aid firefighting efforts.
The fire activity is projected to remain stable, with an estimated containment date set for December 31, 2024. The fuels involved primarily consist of vegetation that has previously burned, which could influence how the fire spreads. Fire agencies remain vigilant while continuing to monitor weather conditions and assess risks to nearby values.
