Wildfire Status:
The Anchor Fire, which is currently active in the Gospel Hump Wilderness, was ignited by a lightning storm that occurred on July 24, 2024. The fire was officially detected on July 28, 2024, and has since grown to cover approximately 400 acres. Firefighting efforts are being led by a local Type 4 Incident Commander, with a current personnel count of 11 engaged in suppression and management activities. The fire's behavior has recently increased, prompting concerns about potential hazards, particularly in light of cooler nighttime temperatures that could influence fire dynamics.
Fire agencies are focusing on structure protection around critical infrastructure, including National Forest Service Road #444, Square Mountain Lookout, and Moore’s Guard Station. As part of their proactive measures, firefighters are also clearing roads to improve access for ongoing firefighting operations. Additionally, an area closure has been enacted to ensure safety, encompassing 57,331 acres within Idaho County, Idaho, with specific boundaries set to restrict access to the affected region.
Current weather conditions are a significant factor in the firefighting efforts, with predictions indicating cooler temperatures at night that could activate "Frost-Kill," potentially altering fire behavior. Fire officials are closely monitoring these conditions and adjusting their strategies accordingly. The overall outlook remains cautious, as increased fire activity has been noted, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and responsiveness from firefighting teams.
