432 acre wildfire
Wallace, Idaho, United States
Bluff Creek Complex
Wildfire Status:
The Bluff Creek Complex wildfire, consisting of multiple fires including the Junction Fire, East Fork Fire, Dominion Point Fire, and Buffalo Fire, was ignited by a lightning storm that struck the Idaho Panhandle National Forests on the evening of July 24, 2024. As of now, the Junction Fire has been prioritized for resource allocation due to the immediate risks it poses, while the other fires are being managed accordingly. The current total acreage affected by the fires is approximately 432 acres, with the Junction Fire being 130 acres and fully contained, the East Fork Fire at 25 acres also fully contained, the Dominion Point Fire at 275 acres, and the Buffalo Fire at a mere 2 acres, which is fully contained as well.
Fire management officials have reported minimal fire behavior characterized by backing, creeping, and smoldering, indicating that the situation is relatively stable for now. Resources have been directed towards controlling the remaining active fires, particularly the Dominion Point Fire, which is the largest and still poses some threats. The incident is being overseen by the Idaho Panhandle Type 4 Incident Management Team, led by Incident Commander Ben Haney.
In terms of weather conditions, the area has faced challenges due to extremely dry conditions, which can contribute to fire spread. However, current assessments show that the fire's behavior is manageable at this time. Firefighting efforts are ongoing, and there are official road and area closures in place to ensure the safety of the public and crews working on the ground. These closures are expected to be lifted as containment efforts progress, with hopes to reopen affected areas by August 10, 2024.
