Bertsch-Oceanview, California, United States
Smith River Complex
Wildfire Status:
The Smith River Complex wildfire in the Six Rivers National Forest was triggered by approximately 150 lightning strikes on August 15, 2023, resulting in at least 27 confirmed fires. Out of these fires, 12 were located in the Gasquet Ranger District in Del Norte County. The challenging terrain and limited access have made suppression efforts difficult. The dry vegetation, caused by below-average rainfall, has further complicated the situation. Despite these challenges, ground and air resources have been fully engaged in suppression efforts.
The fire was declared contained and controlled on November 13, 2023. Various incident management teams have assumed command of different zones within the complex to manage the wildfire effectively. As of the latest update, the wildfire has consumed 95,107 acres, with 100% of the perimeter contained. The fuels involved in the fire include closed timber litter, timber (litter and understory), and brush (2 feet). Due to the fire activity, there are traffic control measures in place on Highway 199 in Del Norte County, causing delays for commuters. For more information on road closures and updates, residents are advised to check the official forest and transportation department websites.
