S-1 Vya Fire Active 2026

The S-1 Vya Fire is burning three miles north of Vya, NV. Reported on August 24, 2026, this full-suppression fire is burning in a combination of grass, brush, and timber. Level 3 – Go now – evacuations have been issued along with Level 2 – Get set – to the west.  

A complex incident management team (CIMT) has been ordered to provide management and additional capacity to the over 300 firefighters already there engaged in the suppression efforts.

Yesterday, the S-1 Vya Fire experienced extreme fire behavior with wind-driven runs and short-range spotting experiencing sustained winds of over 30 m.p.h. throughout the day. 

Firefighters engaged where it was safe to do so with both hotshot crews and engines while being supported by aircraft dropping both water and fire retardant. This included the use of a Boeing 737 air tanker on the northern front of the fire.

Where the fire spotted east over Fort Bidwell Road, firefighters on the ground were able to contain those spots with the assistance of water-dropping helicopters. 

Last night, fire activity decreased in the flatter terrain, but the fire remained active on the west side as it got into more rugged terrain. 

Today, firefighters are going direct where safe to do so focusing on the protection of life and property. As the weather forecast is similar today with high winds, firefighters are looking for containment opportunities both near the fire’s edge and scouting for additional locations that may be needed to give them the highest probably of success.
