Wildfire Status:
As of October 20, 2024, the Bridge Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains has reached 99% containment after growing an additional 346 acres since the previous Friday. Firefighters are primarily engaged in the rugged terrain of Iron Fork Canyon, where they are focused on securing a flare-up in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. Improved weather conditions, including reduced wind, have allowed State Route 39 (San Gabriel Canyon Rd) to reopen to the public, although access remains restricted for non-residents. A contingency line has been established around the fire to prevent further spread.
Firefighting efforts have included aircraft dropping water on hot spots throughout the night, demonstrating the commitment of fire agencies to manage the situation effectively. However, there are concerns about the upcoming strong Santa Ana winds, which could pose a risk for renewed activity in the affected areas. Fire agencies have advised that unburned brush and other fuels within the perimeter may still ignite, leading to visible smoke and flames.
In addition to the active firefighting efforts, road closures remain in effect to ensure public safety, including various roads within the Angeles National Forest that are affected by the fire. The Angeles National Forest has issued a closure order that will remain in place until December 31, 2025. Residents impacted by the fire can find resources and information on recovery efforts from both San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties. As the situation continues to evolve, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 911.
