Swauk Creek (WASES)

Wildfire Status:

The Swauk Creek Fire, which ignited on September 8, 2024, at approximately 3:45 p.m., is currently burning in Kittitas County, Washington, near Highway 97, about 14 miles east of Cle Elum. As of the latest update, the fire has consumed 348 acres and is 67% contained. The cause of the fire is attributed to human activity, and the incident is being managed by a Local Type 4 Incident Management Team after initially being under the supervision of a Southeast Washington Type-3 Incident Management Team.

In terms of firefighting efforts, there are currently 223 personnel involved in operations to suppress the fire. Strategies include improving and maintaining existing control lines, conducting mop-up operations, and removing hazardous tree threats. The teams are also focused on demobilizing resources and transitioning management back to the local unit. Planned actions indicate a continued effort to secure the lines and mitigate any risks associated with the fire’s spread.

Weather conditions are currently favorable for firefighting, with a cooling trend expected to aid in fire control. Recent temperatures have been in the upper 60s to lower 70s with humidity levels between 25-30%. Light winds are present, but they are projected to shift to westerly breezes of around 15 mph in the afternoon. The forecast suggests stable weather with no anticipated perimeter growth, as any remaining isolated interior fuel burning is expected to be limited. Fire officials remain vigilant as they monitor conditions and work towards full containment, which is estimated to be achieved by October 1, 2024.
