Western Pines (WANES)

Wildfire Status:

The Western Pines Fire, which ignited at approximately 12:34 PM on July 9, 2025, is currently active and has burned an area of 5,837 acres. As of now, the fire remains uncontrolled with 0% of its perimeter contained. The fire is primarily spreading between Old Hughes Rd N. and Bald Ridge Rd N., driven by winds from a cold front that has impacted the area, leading to expected growth towards the south and east.

Fire response efforts are robust, with a total of 272 personnel engaged in firefighting operations. Ground crews are focusing on connecting fire lines around the southern perimeter while aerial resources provide additional support. Structure protection teams are evaluating at-risk structures and implementing vegetation mitigation measures to create fire breaks. Increased fire activity is anticipated in the afternoon, leading crews to remain vigilant for any spotting activity over existing fire lines. On the eastern and western flanks of the fire, firefighting teams are working to strengthen fire lines in preparation for mop-up activities.

Weather conditions are currently moderate, with expected temperatures reaching a high of 83°F and a low of 53°F. Winds are forecasted to be out of the west at 5-10 mph, shifting to the northwest in the afternoon. As the evening approaches, winds are expected to calm slightly, which may aid firefighting efforts. However, concerns remain regarding the potential for high temperatures and low relative humidity in the coming days, which could complicate containment efforts. The incident commander, DJ Greene, with the NE Washington Type 3 Incident Management Team #1, continues to oversee operations as the situation develops.
