Wiley Flat (OROCF)

Wildfire Status:

The Wiley Flat Fire, which ignited on September 2, 2024, approximately 10 miles southeast of Post, Oregon, has burned a total of 30,186 acres across the Ochoco National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, and private lands. The fire, caused by lightning, is primarily consuming grass and shrubs at lower elevations while timber is affected at higher elevations. As of the latest reports, the fire is 94% contained, with containment efforts supported by California Complex Incident Management Team 1, which took command of the incident on September 6. On September 19, command will transition to Alaska Team 3.

Currently, there are evacuation orders in place for areas near the fire, and the Red Cross has established an evacuation shelter at Carey Foster Hall in Prineville. Fire restrictions and temporary closures have been implemented in the Ochoco National Forest, affecting the Paulina and Lookout Mountain Ranger Districts, as well as portions of public lands in Crook and Grant Counties. The total personnel engaged in the firefighting efforts is approximately 358.

Weather conditions are currently favorable for firefighting operations, with clear skies and lighter winds contributing to a decrease in humidity by about 5% from the previous day. However, a warming and drying trend is anticipated in the coming days, with relative humidity expected to drop to 25%-30%. While significant fire activity is not expected, there may be isolated pockets of smoldering and creeping fire behavior as residual fuels continue to burn within containment lines. Firefighters are focused on securing the fire perimeter and implementing a suppression repair plan to mitigate impacts from the fire.
