Wildfire Status:

The Winding Waters Complex of fires in Northeast Oregon started from a lightning storm on July 24, 2024, and has since grown to affect multiple areas. The fire response from various agencies, including the Oregon Department of Forestry and US Forest Service, has been robust, with coordinated efforts to contain and control the multiple fires in the region. The fires have been challenging due to extreme weather conditions, including high temperatures, low humidity, and dry lightning.

As the fires continued to grow and spread, additional resources were called in to assist, including helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, dozers, engines, and handcrews. Structural departments and local landowners also joined the firefighting efforts to protect their lands and structures. Despite the difficult conditions, the combined efforts of all involved managed to contain and hold the fires, preventing further spread and damage.

Due to the severity and complexity of the situation, the Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 2 was activated to take over command of the Winding Waters Complex. The team worked to secure resources, provide logistical support, and ensure proper organizational management. With the arrival of the IMT 2, containment efforts improved, and strategic firing operations were conducted to further secure the perimeter of the fires. By August 5, the fires were contained to small sizes, and control was successfully handed back to a local Type 4 organization.
