Deer Fire (MTLNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Deer Fire, which ignited on the evening of July 18, 2025, is currently active and located approximately 5 miles southeast of Missoula and 4 miles southwest of Turah, Montana. As of the latest reports, the fire has consumed around 101 acres and is primarily burning through timber and mixed conifer fuels in steep, rugged terrain. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and for public safety reasons, the Lolo National Forest has implemented temporary road and trail closures effective from July 20. These closures include Service Road 2127 (Deer Creek Road) and Forest Service Trail 512.

Firefighting efforts are underway, with a total of 124 personnel currently assigned to the incident. Resources allocated include five crews, three engines, three helicopters, one water tender, and two dozers. The incident is being managed by Type 3 Incident Commander Sean Rivera. Fire behavior has exhibited wind-driven growth, with isolated and group tree torching and flanking fire behavior observed, resulting in spot fires due to lofted embers. However, cooler temperatures are anticipated to moderate fire behavior, which should aid firefighting efforts.

Weather conditions are expected to be more favorable today, with cooler temperatures that could help stabilize the fire's growth. Fire agencies are actively monitoring the situation and adjusting their strategies accordingly.
