Johnson Fire (MTBRF)

Wildfire Status:

The Johnson Fire, which ignited on July 25, 2024, due to lightning, is currently burning approximately three miles south of the Springer Memorial Community in the East Fork of the Bitterroot. As of now, the fire has consumed about 6,687 acres and is being managed under a confinement strategy, with 59% containment achieved. The majority of the affected area is situated within the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness, where the rugged terrain poses challenges to firefighting efforts. The primary concern remains the protection of private properties in the nearby community, alongside the ecological integrity of the wilderness area.

Firefighting operations are being led by the Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 5, under the command of Joe Sampson. A total of 153 personnel are currently deployed to combat the fire, focusing on suppression repair efforts and maintaining fire lines. Area closures have been enacted around the fire zone to ensure public safety and facilitate effective firefighting operations. These closures affect both sides of the East Fork Road, the East Fork Guard Station, and various trailheads. Fire managers are actively assessing the need for adjustments to the closure boundaries as conditions evolve.

Recent weather conditions have been somewhat favorable for firefighting efforts. A rainfall of approximately 0.35 inches was recorded, contributing to reduced fire activity. The forecast predicts a shift to high pressure, resulting in slightly warmer temperatures and westward winds of 20-25 mph. However, moisture levels are expected to remain moderate, with afternoon humidity dropping to between 35-50%. Minimal fire behavior, characterized by creeping and smoldering, is anticipated as cooler air and moisture continue to influence the area. Overall, the situation is stabilizing, but vigilance remains paramount as the fire continues to be monitored closely.
