Wildfire Status:

The Johnson Fire, located three miles south of the Springer Memorial Community in the East Fork of the Bitterroot National Forest, is currently in a contained and patrol status due to recent snow and cooler temperatures. The fire, which started on July 25, 2024, from a lightning strike, has burned approximately 8,438 acres. Most of the fire activity is concentrated north of the 5771 Road and in the Lick Creek area, with the fire burning in a northeast direction away from nearby communities. The fire is predominantly smoldering and creeping in the Swift and Dense Creek areas, remaining within containment lines and burning into previously affected areas.

Fire management efforts are being led by the Darby-Sula Ranger District, which continues to monitor the situation closely. The primary concern has been the protection of private properties in the Springer Memorial Community, while the eastern portion of the fire extends into remote terrain within the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness. Fire crews are observing minimal fire behavior, primarily characterized by creeping and smoldering, with active fire reported above the 5771 Road.

Recent weather conditions, including snow and cooler temperatures, have significantly aided firefighting efforts, allowing for the effective containment of the fire. As the situation stabilizes, agencies remain vigilant and ready to respond should conditions change. The combination of these favorable weather conditions and strategic management has contributed to the successful control of the Johnson Fire, ensuring the safety of local communities while allowing natural processes to take their course in less accessible areas.
