Johnson Fire (MTBRF)

Wildfire Status:

The Johnson Fire, located three miles south of the Springer Memorial Community within the East Fork of the Bitterroot National Forest, has entered a containment and patrol status due to recent snowfall and cooler temperatures. The fire, which started on July 25, 2024, as a result of lightning, has burned approximately 8,438 acres. Currently, most fire activity is concentrated north of the 5771 Road and in the Lick Creek area, with flames moving northeast, away from populated areas.

Firefighters have been closely monitoring the situation, as the fire has remained within containment lines and is primarily smoldering and creeping within the Swift and Dense Creek areas. Although there is minimal fire behavior observed, the active areas include locations above the 5771 Road and Lick Creek. The fire is burning primarily in lodgepole pine fuels, with moderate amounts of dead and down material contributing to the smoldering conditions.

Given the current weather patterns, which are favorable due to lower temperatures and moisture from recent snowfall, fire officials anticipate continued minimal activity. The primary concerns remain focused on protecting private properties in the nearby Springer Memorial Community while managing the fire's progression through remote wilderness terrain. Overall, the situation is stable, and fire crews are prepared to respond if conditions change.
