Wildfire Status:

The Johnson Fire, which ignited on July 25, 2024, due to lightning, is currently active and has burned approximately 6,687 acres. The fire is situated three miles south of the Springer Memorial Community in the East Fork area, with the majority of the affected terrain located within the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness. As of now, the fire is being managed under a confinement strategy and is reported to be 46% contained. The primary values at risk include private properties in the nearby community, prompting a significant response from fire agencies.

Fire management operations are under the direction of the Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 5, led by Incident Commander Joe Sampson. Currently, there are 81 personnel assigned to the incident, with ongoing suppression repair efforts being conducted to restore areas affected by initial firefighting activities. The response includes constructing fire lines and utilizing heavy equipment for repairs. Area closures remain in effect to ensure public safety and facilitate firefighting operations, particularly around critical locations such as East Fork Road and various trailheads.

Weather conditions are playing a crucial role in the firefighting efforts. Temperatures are expected to reach the low 60s, accompanied by northeast winds at speeds of 12-15 mph, with potential gusts reaching 35-40 mph. These unstable conditions may lead to thunderstorms in the afternoon, which could bring moderate rain, aiding in fire suppression but also presenting challenges with shifting winds. Overall, fire officials are cautiously optimistic, anticipating minimal fire activity as cooler air and moisture move into the region over the next few days.
