Wildfire Status:
The McDermott Fire, located in the Upper Willow Creek area of Montana, continues to burn over an area of 427 acres. The fire is situated in an inaccessible region filled with a significant number of standing dead trees, known as "snags," which complicates firefighting efforts and poses safety risks. Fire managers are closely monitoring the situation, prioritizing the protection of critical values located three miles to the east of the fire's perimeter. Current firefighting personnel on site are minimal, with only one person actively managing the incident.
Recent weather conditions, including precipitation and cloud cover, have contributed to a decrease in significant fire activity. Fire officials do not anticipate any major growth of the fire in the coming days. However, smoke may still be visible as some dead and downed trees continue to smolder within the fire area. The outlook remains cautious but optimistic, with no immediate threats expected due to the damp conditions.
In terms of public safety, all trails in the vicinity have been reopened, although it's important to note that the trails on the Black Pine System remain closed to motorized vehicles, beginning September 1 each year. The collaborative efforts of local county officials and fire management teams are focused on ensuring the safety of both firefighters and the surrounding community as they continue to monitor the McDermott Fire's status.
