Middle Fire (CAYNP)

Wildfire Status:

The Middle Fire, which ignited on August 4, 2024, is currently active near the Middle Fork of the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. As of now, the fire has spread across an area of 310 acres and is reported to be fully contained, with 100% of its perimeter secured by fire crews. The incident has been managed by the National Park Service (NPS), which has implemented a full suppression strategy to effectively control the blaze.

Firefighting efforts have involved aerial support, including helicopters dropping water on the affected areas. Ground crews are actively monitoring the situation, though only a minimal number of personnel are currently engaged, with reports indicating just one firefighter on site at this time. Although the fire is contained, smoke may still be visible from nearby Tioga Road and other high country areas within Yosemite.

Control objectives for the Middle Fire focused on restricting its growth to specific geographical boundaries, including keeping it north of Tioga Road, east of Aspen Valley, south of the Tuolumne River, and west of White Wolf Lodge. In light of the situation, certain trails remain closed to ensure public safety while the area is under surveillance for any possible flare-ups. The origin of the fire has been attributed to natural causes, specifically lightning.
