Echo (CAYNP)

Wildfire Status:

The Echo wildfire, which ignited from a lightning strike on August 2, 2024, is currently active and has burned approximately 93 acres in high elevation terrain, ranging from 8,800 to 9,500 feet. As of October 22, 2024, the fire is reported to be 60% contained. The incident is located north of Little Yosemite Valley, about one mile north of Merced Lake, with no critical values at risk and no anticipated trail closures at this time.

Firefighting efforts are being managed by the National Park Service (NPS), who is overseeing the response to the incident. The current situation indicates that the fire behavior has been predominantly creeping and smoldering in timber litter and duff, with some pockets of heavy dead and down fuels actively burning. This has resulted in moderate smoke visibility from nearby areas such as Glacier Point, Clouds Rest, and Sentinel Dome.

Weather conditions have played a role in the fire's progression, which has been described as very slow. There are minor smoke impacts expected in the immediate vicinity, but overall, the fire is not posing significant threats to infrastructure or wildlife at this time.
