Echo (CAYNP)

Wildfire Status:

The Echo wildfire, which ignited due to a lightning strike on August 2, 2024, is currently active within Yosemite National Park, having burned approximately 34 acres as of September 15, 2024. The fire is situated north of Little Yosemite Valley, just a mile from Merced Lake. Despite the fire's active status, it is being managed with a "monitor/confine and contain" strategy that prioritizes the safety of park employees and visitors, while also protecting the area's natural and cultural resources.

As of now, the Echo fire is not contained, with 0% of its perimeter secured. However, it is exhibiting minimal activity and is well surrounded by the park's trail system, which serves as a natural barrier. Firefighters are employing a combination of handlines and aviation assets to control the spread, focusing on minimizing risks to responders and protecting valuable resources. There are currently no trail closures in the vicinity, although the fire may be visible from certain vantage points within the park, such as Glacier Point.
