Latest update
The Timber Butte fire was reported on the afternoon of September 3rd at approximately 3:00 p.m. Burning in a remote area within the Hidden Pasture Creek Wilderness Area west of Dell, the fire was first reported as visible smoke near Little Water Canyon. Initial attack resources responded, and additional resources were ordered. The fire quickly grew, given the windy conditions associated with the passage of a dry cold front through the area. The fire was estimated at 1,062 acres by the evening hours and 2,245 acres by noon the next day. Given minimal fire behavior, the fire showed no measurable growth over subsequent days.
The fire is burning in steep, rocky terrain in a remote area; these conditions pose challenges to safe access, firefighting operations, and timely medical response if needed.
The fire is burning on lands managed by the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation.
