Wildfire Status:
The Cougar Creek Fire, which ignited on July 15, 2024, has grown to encompass approximately 24,091 acres and is currently 80% contained. The fire is being managed under a full suppression strategy by the Northeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team 1, led by Incident Commander Braden Britt, who took command on August 13, 2024. The response involves collaboration among multiple agencies, including the Washington Department of Natural Resources, Oregon Department of Forestry, US Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management.
Currently, a total of 226 personnel are engaged in firefighting efforts, focusing on minimizing fire activity, which has shown minimal smoldering behavior. The fire is primarily fueled by timber litter, brush, and grass, particularly in lower elevations. Recent burn-out operations have enhanced fire lines, and the combination of wetting rain events has significantly reduced the potential for fire spread, allowing for more effective containment efforts.
Weather conditions in the area have been favorable for firefighting efforts, contributing to decreased fire activity. The estimated date for full containment is projected for October 1, 2024. Continuing assessments will be essential as the situation develops, with monitoring of the area's topography and vegetation dynamics playing a critical role in maintaining control over the blaze.
