Wildfire Status:
The Cougar Creek Fire, which ignited on July 15, 2024, has progressed to a size of approximately 24,091 acres. As of August 19, 2024, the fire is currently 80% contained, with fire management teams working under a full suppression strategy. The Northeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team 1, led by Incident Commander Braden Britt, took command of the situation on August 13, 2024. The fire is being managed cooperatively by the Washington Department of Natural Resources, Oregon Department of Forestry, US Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management.
Currently, there are 226 personnel actively fighting the fire. The terrain where the fire is located presents a mix of ridgelines, benches, and steep canyons, which can significantly affect fire behavior. The fuels involved include timber, brush, and grass, with minimal smoldering observed. Recent burn-out operations have effectively reduced the amount of combustible material, and recent wetting rain events have further suppressed fire activity and spread.
The estimated containment date is projected for October 1, 2024, with fire behavior expected to remain minimal. The ongoing support from various agencies and favorable weather conditions have greatly aided in managing the fire's spread, allowing firefighters to establish a solid containment line and mitigate potential threats to surrounding areas.
