Wildfire Status:

The Williams Mine Fire, ignited by lightning on August 5, 2024, is currently active in the Mt. Adams Wilderness area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, covering approximately 13,092 acres. As of the latest report, 31% of the fire's perimeter has been contained. The incident is being managed by a local USFS Type 3 Team, led by Incident Commander Shawn Otto, with a total of 117 personnel engaged in firefighting efforts.

Firefighting operations have focused on preparing control lines, applying water both from the air and on the ground, and removing hazardous trees to prevent the fire from spreading toward private land and the nearby community of Trout Lake. The primary fuels involved in the fire include brush, timber, and dead woody material, with minimal active fire behavior observed as it mainly exhibits backing and creeping characteristics.

Weather conditions are currently favorable for firefighting efforts, with higher relative humidity and cooler temperatures helping to limit fire growth. A weather disturbance is expected to bring increased northwest winds and rainfall, which should further hinder fire activity. These conditions are projected to persist over the next few days, with forecasts indicating minimal fire behavior due to increased humidity and potential rain. The estimated containment date for the Williams Mine Fire is set for October 31, 2024, as ongoing efforts to improve control lines continue.
