West Fork Fire Active 2026
West Fork Fire is the 5th-largest active wildfire in Texas, burning 23 miles north of Rocksprings.

The West Fork Fire in Sutton County started on August 28, 2026, under elevated fire conditions. Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to provide assistance in the form of additional firefighters, aircraft and heavy equipment at 4:54 pm. Texas A&M Forest Service is currently in unified command with local departments.
Update - August 29 - 11:30 am - Fire is actively burning at the heel. One private ranch dozer is working the east side of the fire as Texas A&M Forest Service and TIFMAS heavy equipment are working both heads of the fire.
Update - August 28 - 6:30 pm Moderate fire activity was observed burning predominately in grass and brush. Aircraft made beneficial water drops on the flank of the fire. Heavy equipment anchored a containment line off of a road. The fire was observed to have two heads and 6-8 ranch houses and one residence were threatened within a half mile. Just before midnight, crews engaged in strategic firing operations.
