Kress Fire has burned 1,551 acres, burning within the perimeter near Kress.

At 4:00 PM on Monday, May 18th, Texas A&M Forest Service received a request for assistance for a fire approximately 13 miles northwest of Plainview, Texas in Swisher County. Heavy equipment, firefighters and aviation resources were requested to assist with the fire. Texas A&M Forest Service crews are working in unified command with local resources.
Update - May 18, 7:00 p.m. Forward progression of the fire has been stopped. Equipment are working to reinforce the right flank of the fire in advance of tonight's forecasted wind shifts.
The voluntary evacuation that was in place for the City of Kress has been lifted, according to the City of Kress Facebook page.
FINAL UPDATE: The fire is 100% contained as of 6:15 p.m. on May 19, 2026. All state resources are off of the fire.
