Kurk is the 2nd-largest active wildfire in Texas, burning 10 miles southeast of San Saba.

In the midafternoon of Tuesday, September 8, 2026, Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to provide assistance to local fire departments with the Kurk Fire in San Saba County. Additional firefighters, heavy equipment and air resources responded quickly. Texas A&M Forest Service operated in unified command with the local fire departments. The fire is approximately ¼ mile away from Rocky Hollow Subdivision. Multiple structures are threatened. The fire moved at a very high rate of spread with running, spotting and torching. Extreme fire behavior was observed at times in thick juniper.
