Hunggate Fire 2026
Hunggate Fire is the largest wildfire this season in Texas, burning 1 mile south of Canyon.
Latest update
On May 14, 2026, At approximately 4:30 pm, a storm cell came over the area of Randall County creating dry lighting which started a series of wildfires throughout the area. At 4:30 pm Texas A&M Forest Service was requested by Randall County Fire Department for a fire off of FM 1705 and Buffalo Lake Rd. The fire has jumped FM 1714 moving north. Multiple structures are threatened. Texas A&M Forest Service is working in unified command with Canyon Fire Department. Fire engines are currently doing structure protection and heavy equipment is engaging on both flanks. Aviation resources are also being utilized. Forward progression has stopped.
Update - May 17, 12:00 p.m. - There are no visible smokes on the fire at this time. The Temporary Flight Restriction has been removed. Crews are engaged in mopping-up and patrolling.
Update - May 18, 2026, 8:00 a.m. - Firefighters will continue to patrol the fire's edge and check for any problems. Palo Duro Canyon State Park is opened for visitors to drive through, but all hiking trails are still closed.
Final Update - May 19, 2026 - 6:00 p.m. - The fire is 100% contained and all state resources are off of the fire.
