Latest update
The Crown Creek Fire began on August 29, 2025, following lightning strikes in Stevens County, northeastern Washington. Burning through a mix of grass, brush, and timber in rugged terrain, the fire grew quickly, forcing multiple evacuation levels for nearby communities. By early September, the fire had expanded to several thousand acres, threatening homes, powerlines, property, and livestock. State mobilization was authorized on August 31, bringing in additional resources and strike teams to support local districts/agencies actively involved in initial attack suppression efforts.
At its peak, the fire reached over 14,000 acres. Thanks to favorable weather, aggressive firefighting efforts, and coordination with cooperators, containment steadily increased to more than 90 percent by the end of September. While mop-up, hazard tree removal, and suppression repair continue, officials remain alert to interior hotspots and lingering smoke impacts. The Crown Creek Fire has underscored both the challenges of rapid fire growth in mixed fuels and the importance of strong interagency coordination in protecting local communities. Over the duration of the fire, multiple incident management teams worked toward containment of the fire and implement suppression repair.
