Wildfire Status:
The North Willamette Complex wildfire, encompassing several fires including the Boulder Creek, Linton Creek, Pyramid, Round Top, and Ore Fires, is currently burning in the Willamette National Forest. As of September 16, 2024, the total area affected by these fires is approximately 6,657 acres. The majority of the fires were ignited by lightning, with the Ore Fire's cause still under investigation. The fire behavior has been characterized by minimal creeping and backing, with some isolated tree torching observed. The landscape consists of a mix of conifer timber litter and understory, along with large snags and heavy downed fuel loadings, which complicate firefighting efforts.
Firefighting agencies have deployed a total of 1,341 personnel to manage the situation. The Incident Commander, from the Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 6, is overseeing operations. Recently, there have been positive developments in the evacuation status near the Boulder Creek Fire, allowing for some areas to be downgraded to a Level 1 evacuation notice. This progress is a result of the effective containment efforts in the area, with the Boulder Creek Fire currently at 0% containment but showing signs of reduced activity due to firefighting efforts.
Weather conditions have played a significant role in fire management. While warmer and drier weather has been reported, there are predictions for increased relative humidity and potential light precipitation, which may help to reduce fire behavior and limit spread in some areas. However, in the Boulder Creek area, the drying of fine fuels could lead to increased fire activity in the afternoons. Fire officials are continuing to implement various strategies, including ground crews and aerial support, to ensure the safety of personnel and nearby communities while effectively managing the fire's progression.
