Wildfire Status:
The Dixon Fire, which was initially reported on August 10, 2024, at approximately 2:40 PM, has grown to encompass an area of 1,970 acres. As of the latest update, 87% of the fire's perimeter is contained. The fire, located near Tiller, Oregon, has been characterized as wind-driven and rapidly growing, impacting lands managed by multiple agencies including the Douglas Forest Protective Association, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the Tiller Rural Fire Protection District. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Current firefighting efforts involve a total of 411 personnel who are actively engaged in mop-up operations across all divisions. Fire management aims to identify and complete suppression repairs where possible, while also monitoring for any new fire starts due to lightning in the area. Incident Commander Matt Howard and Deputy Incident Commander Dan Quinones lead the response, with plans in place to transition to a Type 4 organization within the next 24 hours. The estimated date for full containment of the fire is September 15, 2024.
Weather conditions in the region are currently favorable for firefighting efforts, with light winds from the west and elevated humidity levels due to a light flow from the Pacific. Temperatures have risen into the 70s, but a significant change is anticipated as a Pacific storm system approaches, bringing widespread showers and the potential for isolated thunderstorms from Thursday through Saturday. These weather changes are expected to aid in suppression efforts, with rainfall accumulations potentially reaching 0.50 inches.
