Warner Peak Fire (ORSHR)

Wildfire Status:

The Warner Peak Fire, which ignited on August 5, 2024, is currently active within the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, approximately six miles east of Plush, Oregon. As of August 19, the fire has burned an area of 65,866 acres, with 85% of its perimeter contained. The incident is classified as a full suppression strategy fire, and fire agencies are actively working to mitigate its spread.

A total of 353 personnel are currently assigned to the incident, under the command of Incident Commander Carl Schwope and Deputy Incident Commander Caleb Finch from Southwest Area Team 1. The fire's fuels consist primarily of brush and tall grass, which are contributing to moderate fire behavior, particularly in the southeastern portions where pockets of fuel remain uncontained. The estimated date for complete containment is projected for September 5, 2024.

Current weather conditions pose challenges for firefighting efforts, with humidity levels dropping into the single digits and breezy winds expected throughout the day. While today is predicted to be the driest day in the immediate forecast, a low-pressure system anticipated later in the week may help to raise humidity levels and potentially bring precipitation, which could assist in further controlling the fire. Fire crews are focusing their efforts on the uncontained perimeter and monitoring interior pockets of heat, which are expected to continue burning for the next few days.
