Wildfire Status:

The Lone Rock Fire, which ignited on July 13, 2024, has grown to a size of over 130,000 acres and is currently reported to be 98% contained. Firefighting efforts are being managed under a full suppression strategy, involving multiple Incident Management Teams working collaboratively to establish containment lines and conduct mop-up operations in various areas. The fire is affecting multiple counties, including Gilliam, Wheeler, Morrow, and Grant, with local ranchers and Rural Fire Protection Districts playing a crucial role in initial response efforts aimed at protecting structures and private properties.

Weather conditions initially posed challenges for firefighting efforts, with hot, dry, and windy conditions contributing to the fire's rapid growth. However, recent wetter conditions have assisted firefighters in securing the northern perimeter of the fire, allowing for progress in containment. Although many structures were successfully saved during the incident, some loss was unfortunately reported. As of now, only some Level 1 (ready) evacuations remain in effect, and the public is encouraged to check local county websites or the interactive evacuation map for real-time updates on evacuation levels.

In terms of air quality, the Lone Rock Fire continues to emit smoke, impacting areas downwind. Fortunately, reduced fire activity has led to moderate air quality in central Oregon, with some locations experiencing good air quality. The public is advised to stay informed about air quality updates and to adhere to fire prevention measures, including compliance with local fire restrictions. An evacuation center has been established at Wheeler High School, and a large animal shelter is available at the County Fairgrounds in Fossil, Oregon, to support displaced residents and their animals.
