Wildfire Status:

The Lone Rock Fire, which ignited on July 13, 2024, has reached a size of over 137,000 acres and is currently under a full suppression strategy. Local ranchers and fire protection districts were the first responders, working diligently to safeguard structures and private property in the affected areas, which span across Gilliam, Wheeler, Morrow, and Grant counties. Firefighters have made significant progress, achieving approximately 98% containment as they continue to construct containment lines and initiate mop-up operations in certain locations. While many structures have been saved, some losses have occurred due to the fire's extensive footprint.

Initially, hot, dry, and windy conditions impeded firefighters' efforts, but recent wetter weather has aided in controlling the blaze, particularly on its northern edge. As a result of the improved conditions, evacuation levels have been downgraded, with only some Level 1 (ready) evacuations remaining in place. Residents can refer to the interactive evacuation map for real-time updates on evacuation statuses and any necessary preparations.

The Lone Rock Fire continues to affect air quality due to the smoke it produces. Residents are encouraged to monitor air quality through resources such as Airnow.gov and to adhere to public fire restrictions issued by the Oregon Department of Forestry. An evacuation center has been established at Wheeler High School, and a large animal shelter is available at the County Fairgrounds in Fossil, Oregon, to support those displaced by the fire. Despite the challenges posed by the wildfire, local teams remain committed to protecting lives and properties in the affected regions.
