Whisky Creek Fire (ORMHF)

Wildfire Status:

The Whisky Creek Fire, located six miles southeast of Cascade Locks, Oregon, has currently burned approximately 3,145 acres and is 25% contained. This wildfire is classified as a full suppression fire, actively managed by the Central Cascades Interagency Incident Management Team. Firefighters are focusing on maintaining control lines on the southern and eastern edges of the fire, utilizing the Eagle Creek Fire scar as a natural barrier to limit its spread. As of the latest updates, the fire has exhibited minimal behavior, primarily smoldering with some heavier fuels igniting internally but posing no immediate threat to containment.

Fire suppression efforts are bolstered by recent rainfall, which has helped moderate fire behavior and reduce the intensity of the flames. However, communities in the Hood River Valley and Columbia River Gorge may continue to experience smoke due to the burning of heavy fuels. The safety of both firefighters and the public remains a top priority, and fire managers are assessing weather conditions to plan for more direct suppression tactics as appropriate. Currently, there are 95 personnel involved in firefighting efforts, with resources including hand crews, engines, and water tenders deployed to the scene.

The fire's fuels consist mainly of timber litter and understory, with mixed-age conifer species as well as various shrub types present in the area. Despite the challenging steep and rugged terrain of the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness in the Mt. Hood National Forest, the fire management team is optimistic about the containment efforts as they project the fire to be fully contained by October 31, 2024.
